Glossary of Psychic, Paranormal and Metaphysical TermsA - B - C - D - E - F - G - H - I - J - K - L - M - N - O - P - Q - R - S - T - U - V - W - X - Y - Z Absent Healing - Healing that takes place when the Healer is not in direct contact with the person to be healed. Absent Sitter - A person, not present during a sitting, on whose behalf readings are given. (See also Proxy Sitting) Acupuncture - Traditional Chinese medical practice that involves sticking needles into specific locations on the body. An ancient medical procedure that originated in China more than 2000 years ago. It is based on the theoretical concept of balanced Qi (pronounced 'chee') or vital energy that flows throughout the body via certain pathways that are accessed by puncturing the skin with hair-thin needles at particular locations called acupuncture points. Stimulation of acupuncture points is believed to stimulate the brain and spinal cord to release chemicals that change the experience of pain or cause biochemical changes that may stimulate healing and promote general well-being. (See also healing.) Akashic Records - Memories of all experiences since the beginning of time, believed by some mystical doctrines to be stored permanently in a spiritual substance (Akasha). (Psychic Dictionary Index) Allegorical - Something describing a subject under the guise of another; describing by resemblances; figurative. Alpha Rhythm - Electrical activity in the brain (about 10 cycles per second) associated with a state of mental relaxation. Altered State of Consciousness (ASC) - A term used to refer to any state of consciousness that is different from "normal" states of waking or sleeping. ASCs include hypnosis, trance, ecstasy, psychedelic and meditative experience. ASCs do not necessarily have paranormal features. Angels - Benevolent spiritual beings who help people in need. See also Guardian Angel Announcing Dream - A dream believed to announce an individual's rebirth. See also Reincarnation. Angelic Realm - The energetic level where angels are said to live. Apparition - A visual appearance, often of a person or scene, generally experienced in a waking or hypnagogic / hypnopompic state. See also Crisis Apparition, Ghost, Haunting Apport - A physical object which appears in a way that cannot be explained (seeming to come from nowhere). Apports are often associated with the seance room and physical mediumship. Cf. deport. ASC - See Alter State of Consciousness Astral Body - A term used by occultists, spiritualists and theosophists to refer to a supposed "double" of the person's physical body. The astral body is believed to be separable from the physical body during astral projection (out of body experience) and at death. Astral Projection - A term used by occultists, spiritualists and theosophists for the out of body experience. It is believed to result when the astral body separates from the physical body. Astrology - The study of the positions and aspects of celestial bodies in the belief that they have an influence on the course of natural earthly occurrences and human affairs; the study of occult influence of stars on human affairs. Aura - The energy field emanating from the surface of a person or object. This emanation is visualized as an outline of cascading color and may be held to represent soul vibrations, chakric emergence or a reflection of surrounding energy fields. Automatic Writing - The ability to write intelligible messages without conscious control or knowledge of what is being written.

(a) Seeing one's "double". (See also Astral Body) Biomagnetic Field/Sheath - The energy field that surrounds all living things. Cabalistic - Having a secret or hidden meaning; occult; cryptic writings. Celestical - Of or relating to the sky or the heavens; Supremely good; sublime. Chakra - A spinning vortex of subtle energy. The term comes from the Sanskrit word chakram, which means "wheel", because these centers appear to clairvoyants and yogis as whirling disks of light. The system of subtle energy channels and centers is the basis for the Meridians and energy points used in acupuncture, yoga practice, and energy healing. There are eight main chakras, located in a line aligned with the spine. These centers connect the energy of the physical body with that of the Subtle Body. The eight chakras are located in the crown of the head, the center of the forehead (the third eye), the throat, the solar plexus, the base of the spine, the genitals, and beneath the feet (earth). When the chakras are functioning properly, the body's physical and subtle energies are in balance and harmony. Malfunctions can lead to physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual disturbances. Many energy workers believe that the chakras can be healed by the interaction between the vibrations of crystals and the energies of the body's Biomagnetic or subtle energy field. Channel - The medium through which a spirit guide purportedly communicates with the physical world; to serve as a medium for a spirit guide. Channeling - Transmitting of messages from one world to another. Clairaudience / Clairaudient - The power to hear things outside the range of normal perception; the power of faculty of hearing something not present to the ear, but regarded objective reality. Clairsentience / Clairsentient - Having feeling or sensation as distinguished as perception and thought. Clairvoyance / Clairvoyant - The power to see objects or events that cannot be perceived by the senses; acute intuitive insight or perceptiveness; the faculty of seeing what is out of sight; deep insight; acute insight or perceptiveness. Coincidence - The occurrence, within a short space of time, of two or more meaningfully related events and without any apparent causal connection between them. Coincidences are sometimes bizarre and extraordinarily improbable. Cold Reading - A reading given with no prior knowledge of the sitter. Often a mixture of very general statements which could apply to anyone, together with inferences made from cues presented by the sitter (e.g., physical appearance, clothes, tone of voice, statements made). Cosmic Consciousness - A blissful experience in which the person becomes aware of the whole universe as a living being. Crisis Apparition - An apparition in which a person is seen within a few hours of an important crisis such as death, accident or sudden illness. Crystal Gazing - Staring into a reflecting surface (e.g., mirror, glass, crystal, liquid) in order to obtain paranormal information. Also known as scrying. (See also divination) Crystal Healing - Use of crystals of differing colors (therefore different vibrations) on parts of the body to stimulate health. Deja Vu - The feeling of having previously experienced a situation; the illusion of having already experienced something actually being experienced for the first time; the experience of thinking that anew situation had occurred before. Diety - The rank of essential nature of God or a god; one exalted or revered as supremely good or powerful. Divine - Relating to or preceding directly from God, or a god. Divining Rod - A forked rod (or sometimes a pair of L-shaped rods) used in dowsing. Divination - Practices involving the interpretation of signs or symbols that seek to obtain oracular knowledge of events. Examples of divinatory practices are geomancy, tarot, I Ching, sortilege, and reading tea leaves. Divinity - A divine being; a God. Dowsing - The paranormal detection of underground water or mineral deposits (or lost persons and objects) using a divining rod or pendulum. Dream Therapy / Dream Interpretation - Analysis of dreams and their meanings. Empath / Empathic - The action of understanding, being aware of, being sensitive to, and vicariously experiencing the feelings thoughts, feelings and experiences of another of either past or present without having the feelings, thoughts and experiences fully communicated in an objectively explicit manner. ESP - Extrasensory Perception - Perception by means other than through the ordinary senses, as in telepathy, clairvoyance or precognition. Apparent power to perceive things that are not present to the senses. Fairy - Also: Faerie. Small, human-like mythical being. May be benevolent or malevolent. Faith Healing - Healing that is associated with prayer or belief in Divine power. Foresight - The act or power of foreseeing; the act of looking forward. Foretell - To tell before hand; predict. Foresee - To see beforehand. Ghost - Popular term for an experience believed to indicate the presence of the spirit of a deceased person. Guardian Angel - An angel believed to protect the individual. See also Guide Guide - A spirit who is believed to assist a person's spiritual journey. See also Angels, Guardian Angel Haunting - Paranormal phenomena such as apparitions, unexplained sounds, smells or other sensations that are associated over a lengthy period of time with a specific location. Healer - Someone who claims the power of healing. Healing - Generally indicates cures that cannot be explained in terms of accepted medical principles. See also Faith Healing, Psychic Healing, Spirit Cures Holistic - Targeted to the whole person - mind, body and soul; relating to or concerned with wholes or with complete systems rather than with the analysis of, treatment of, or dissection into parts (holistic medicine attempts to treat both the mind and the body). I Ching - Ancient Chinese Book of Changes. It describes 64 hexagrams (patterns of 6 broken and unbroken lines) which are used in a divinatory practice involving the throwing of yarrow stalks or coins. Incorporeal - Having no body or form; having no material body or form. Insight - The power or act of seeing into a situation; the act or result of apprehending the inner nature of things or of seeing intuitively. Intuition - The immediate knowing/apprehension by the mind without reasoning; quick and ready insight; the act or faculty of knowing or sensing without the use of rational processes; immediate cognition. A sense of something not evident or deducible; an impression. Invocation - Summoning benevolent spiritual beings. Karma - Hindu and Buddhist ethical doctrine of "as one sows, so shall one reap". See also Reincarnation Laying on Hands - A healing practice, in which the healer's hands are placed on or near the body of the sick person. Life Review - Flashback memories of the whole of a person's life, often associated with the near-death experience. Lucid Dreaming - Dreaming in which the person is aware that the experience is a dream. Often associated with feelings of aliveness and freedom, and with the ability to control dream events. Mantra - A sacred sound or sacred syllables used in meditation. See also Transcendental Meditation Meditation - There are many types of meditation which tap into the calming, therapeutic effect of quiet contemplation; a technique of meditation in which the mantra is chanted in order to foster calm, creativity and spiritual well-being; to engage in contemplation or reflection; to focus on one's thoughts. Medium - A person thought to have the power to communicate with the spirits of the dead or with agents of another world or dimension; an individual held to be a channel of communication between the earthly world and the world of spirits. Mentalism - Para-psychological activities, such as telepathy and mind reading; the belief that some mental phenomena cannot be explained by physical laws. Metaphysical - Without material form or substance. Metaphysics - Philosophy concerned with the nature of being, truth. Miracle - A beneficial event attributed to supernatural or divine intervention. Mystic - Concerned with direct communication with God/Nature; of or relating to mysteries or esoteric rites. Numerology - The study of the occult meanings of numbers and their supposed influence on human life. Numinous - Spiritually elevated, sublime, concerned with the spirit rather than the mind and body; filled with the sense of the presence divinity; appealing the higher emotions or the aesthetic sense. Occult - Of, relating to, or dealing with supernatural influences, agencies, or phenomena. Oracle - A person (as a priestess of ancient Greece) through whom a deity is believed to speak; a shrine in which a deity reveals hidden knowledge or the hidden purpose through such a person; an answer or decision given by an oracle; a person giving wise or authoritative decisions or opinions; an authoritative or wise expression or answer. Palmistry - The practice or art of telling fortunes and determining personality from the lines, marks and patterns on the palms of the hands. Paranormal - Beyond the range of normal experience or scientific explanation; seemingly outside normal sensory channels. Parapsychology - The study of the evidence for psychological phenomena, such as telepathy, clairvoyance and psychokinesis, that are inexplicable by science; the study of the evidence of mental awareness or influence of external objects without interaction from known physical means. Precognition/Precognitive - Knowing beforehand; clairvoyance relating to an event or state not yet experienced. Prediction - Prophecy, foretelling; something that is forecast. Premonition - Previous notice or warning; anticipation of an event without conscious reason; a presentiment of the future; a foreboding; a warning in advance; a forewarning. Presage - Something that foreshadows or portends a future event; an intuition or feeling of what is going to happen in the future. Prescient - Foreknowledge of events; divine omniscience; human anticipation of the course of events; foresight. Prophacy - A prediction of something to come. Psychic - A person apparently responsive to psychic forces; capable of extraordinary mental processes, such as extrasensory perception and mental telepathy; related to or preformed by the mind, personal susceptible to occult; lying outside the sphere of physical science or knowledge; immaterial, moral, or spiritual in origin or force influences; outside the domain of rational law; sensitive to non-physical or spiritual forces and influences. Psyche - Soul; spirit; mind. Regression - Reversion to an earlier or less mature pattern or behavior of feeling. Reiki - Hands are laid on energy centers of the body to enable healing to occur. Remote Viewing - Remote viewing is a fancy name for telepathy or clairvoyance, the psychic ability to perceive places, persons, and actions that are not within the range of the senses. Remote Viewing (RV) refers to the attempt to gather information about a distant or unseen target using paranormal means or extra-sensory perception. Typically a remote viewer is expected to give information about an object that is hidden from physical view and separated at some distance. If a "beacon" is used to send psychic images, it is said to be telepathy. If no beacon is used, then it is clairvoyance. The term was introduced by physicists Dr. Russell Targ and physicist/scientologist Dr. Harold Puthoff in 1974 to describe their work with alleged psychics for the U.S. government in a project known as Stargate. Remote viewing is a kind of psychic dowsing. Instead of a twig or other device, one uses psychic power alone to dowse the entire galaxy, if need be, for whatever one wants: oil, mountains on Jupiter, a lost child, a buried body, a hostage site thousands of miles away, a secret meeting inside the Pentagon or the Kremlin, etc. Remote viewing, like other forms of extra-sensory perception, is generally considered as pseudoscience due to the need to overcome fundamental ideas about causality, time, and other principles currently held by the scientific community, and the lack of a positive theory that explains the outcomes. Runes - Clay tablets etched with characters, used to tell the future; any of the characters of any of several alphabets used by the Germanic peoples. Seance - A meeting of people to receive spiritualistic messages. Seer - One that predicts events or developments; a person credited with extraordinary moral and spiritual insight; one that practices divination especially by concentration on a glass or crystal globe. Shaman / Shamanism - A priest or priestess who uses magic for the purpose of curing the sick, divining the hidden and controlling events. Sixth Sense - A power of perception seemingly independent of the five senses; keen intuition. Spirit - Animating or vital principal; disembodied soul; supernatural being or essence; the immaterial intelligent or sentient part of a person. Spiritual - Concerned with, preceding from the soul, spirit, star-gazing; of, related to, consisting of, or affecting the spirit; of or relating to sacred matters; of or related to supernatural beings or phenomena. Spiritualism - The belief that the dead communicate with the living, as through a medium. Supernatural - Of or relating to existence outside the natural world; attributed to a power that seems to violate or go beyond natural forces. Symbolic - Representing the immaterial or abstract thing. Tarot Cards/Deck - A set of (usually 72) cards that include 22 cards representing vices, virtues, elemental forces, and death and fortune etc.; used in fortune telling. Telekinetic - The production of motion in objects (as by a spiritualistic medium) without contact or other physical means. Telepathy - Communication of impressions from mind to mind without the aid of senses; communication from one mind to another by extraordinary means; communication through means other than the senses, as by the exercise of an occult power. Thought Reading - Direct perception of another's thoughts. Unworldly - Not of this world, concerned with the spirit and soul; not of this world spiritual. Visionary - Having or marked by foresight and imagination. Zodiac - A figure representing the signs of the zodiac and their symbols; an imaginary band in the heavens centered on the ecliptic that encompasses the apparent paths of all the planets except Pluto and is divided into 12 constellations or signs, each taken for astrological purposes to extend 30 degrees of longitude. |
