Meet HAR StarScrtWspr - This Month's Interview What is your psychic gift? What is your favorite color? At what age did you realize you had this gift? What type of music do you like? How has your gift effected your life? Do you do anything to enhance your gift? Do you have any general life advises for our readers? August 2007 Night Sky Jupiter is the brightest star of the evening, shining in the southwest after dusk. Orange-red Antares is below it. The fainter white stars of Scorpius are scattered around them and to their right. Meanwhile, bright Vega shines almost straight overhead after dark, Arcturus has staked out a spot in the middle of the western sky, and the Big Dipper is dipping in the northwest. And if your sky is truly dark, the vast, starry band of the Milky Way arches high overhead, from low in the south-southwest to the north-northeast. 3 - The Moon is at perigee. 7 - If you're up after about 1 a.m. today look for the last-quarter Moon coming up in the east-northeast. To the right of it (more or less) are the Pleiades and, a little farther, Mars. By early dawn they are high in the east, with Aldebaran now below them and Orion far below Aldebaran. 12 - The Perseid meteor shower should be at its peak late tonight, and this year there's no moonlight to interfere. The best time to watch is from 11 p.m. tonight until dawn. Dress warmly and find a dark spot with an open view of the sky. Lie back in a sleeping bag (good mosquito armor), let your eyes adapt to the dark, and gaze up into the stars. The best direction to watch is wherever your sky is darkest. You may see a meteor once a minute on average, fewer if your sky is light-polluted. The shower is also active for several days before and after its peak. 13 - Neptune is at opposition, when it aligns opposite the Sun. It rises around sunset and remains in the sky all night. It is brightest for the year, too, although you still need a small telescope to pick it out. 17 - Spica is the star just above the crescent Moon in twilight. Bright Arcturus shines very high above them, and somewhat to the right. 18 - The Moon is at apogee. 19 - The Moon at dusk is roughly midway between Spica, which is far to its right, and the Jupiter-Antares pair, far to its upper left. 20 - Jupiter and Antares shine to the Moon's upper left. 21 - Antares is very close to the Moon this evening, with brighter Jupiter looking on from above. 27 - Full Moon tonight, called the Fruit Moon or Green Corn Moon. 28 - A total eclipse of the Moon is visible before or during dawn from the central and western U.S. and Canada. Easterners can watch the Moon sliding into eclipse while dawn is brightening and the Moon is dropping low in the west. Details: partial eclipse begins at 3:51 a.m. CDT, total eclipse begins at 4:52, totality ends at 6:23, and partial eclipse ends at 7:24. 30 - The Moon is at perigee. 31 - Venus is beginning its months-long apparition as the morning star. During dawn, look for it quite low in the east. Don't confuse it with Sirius in the southeast.
