Happy Holidays to all!

Welcome to the holidays 2009. The holidays are a favorite time of year for me as well as many others. A joyous time full of family, friends, good will towards all. With the current high unemployment and tough times there is no doubt that this season's holiday will be a very stressful time for many people. I think at times like these it is a good idea to be able to take a step back from the hussleand bussleand remember what is most important. It's not the presents under the tree or who spent more money on gifts. It's the Christmas spirit. One of giving of yourself to others. Taking the time to see that the world is still a wondrousplace. Go help the kids build a snowman. Maybe take some home made cookies to a neighbor who doesn't have family. Wish people you met on the street and in the stores Happy Holidays. And most of all be thankful for what you do have.

Did you ever wonder about the colors red and green? I always wondered how they became the Christmas standards. Did some research and thought I'd share it with you.

These are all the things associated with each color-

Green - Induces the power of Venus and is symbolic of the Earth’s elements. It is used to influence such matters as: Herbal Magick, Luck, Fertility, Physical Healing, Balance, Prosperity, Courage, Change, Material Things, Peace, Harmony, Relationships and Success. Red - Induces the power of Mars and can be used to influence Saturn. It is used when attuning with the God in his fiery aspect. Red is the colorof Vitality, Power, Strength and Courage and is Invigorating, Motivating and Passionate. It is used to influence such matters as: Passion, Partnerships, Courage, Action, Physical Energy, Aggression, Sex, Physical Energy, Sport, Guns, Tools, Metals, Police, Soldiers, Combat, Confrontation, Business Deals, Buying and Selling, Mechanical Things, Repairs and Hunting

Herb Cranberry

Common Names—cranberry, American cranberry, bog cranberry

Latin Name—Vaccinium macrocarpon

What It Is Used For
Historically, cranberry fruits and leaves were used for a variety of problems, such as wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.
Recently, cranberry products have been used in the hope of preventing or treating urinary tract infections or Helicobacter pylori infections that can lead to stomach ulcers, or to prevent dental plaque. Cranberry has also been reported to have antioxidant and anticancer activity.

How It Is Used
The berries are used to produce beverages and many other food products, as well as dietary supplements in the form of extracts, teas, and capsules or tablets.

What the Science Says
Some studies testing cranberry products for their ability to prevent urinary tract infections have shown promise. These studies have generally been small in size, and some were not randomized or controlled; therefore, the results are not conclusive.
Cranberry products have not been adequately tested to see if they can be used to help treat an existing urinary tract infection.

Research shows that components found in cranberry may prevent bacteria, such as E. coli, from clinging to the cells along the walls of the urinary tract and causing infection. However, the mechanism of action of cranberry is not fully understood.

NCCAM, the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, and the National Institute for Dental and Craniofacial Research are funding studies to understand whether and how cranberry might work to:
Prevent urinary tract infection
Prevent the formation of dental plaque.
Side Effects and Cautions
Eating cranberry products in food appears to be safe, but drinking excessive amounts of juice could cause gastrointestinal upset or diarrhea.
People who think they have a urinary tract infection should see a health care provider for proper diagnosis and treatment. Cranberry products should not be used to treat infection.

Tell your health care providers about any complementary and alternative practices you use. Give them a full picture of what you do to manage your health. This will help ensure coordinated and safe care.

Christmas and Pagans

Few people realize that the origins of a form of Christmas was pagan & celebrated in Europe long before anyone there had heard of Jesus Christ.

No one knows what day Jesus Christ was born on. From the biblical description, most historians believe that his birth probably occurred in September, approximately six months after Passover. One thing they agree on is that it is very unlikely that Jesus was born in December, since the bible records shepherds tending their sheep in the fields on that night. This is quite unlikely to have happened during a cold Judean winter. So why do we celebrate Christ’s birthday as Christmas, on December the 25th?

The answer lies in the pagan origins of Christmas. In ancient Babylon, the feast of the Son of Isis (Goddess of Nature) was celebrated on December 25. Raucous partying, gluttonous eating and drinking, and gift-giving were traditions of this feast.

In Rome, the Winter Solstice was celebrated many years before the birth of Christ. The Romans called their winter holiday Saturnalia, honoring Saturn, the God of Agriculture. In January, they observed the Kalends of January, which represented the triumph of life over death. This whole season was called Dies Natalis Invicti Solis, the Birthday of the Unconquered Sun. The festival season was marked by much merrymaking. It is in ancient Rome that the tradition of the Mummers was born. The Mummers were groups of costumed singers and dancers who traveled from house to house entertaining their neighbors. From this, the Christmas tradition of caroling was born.

In northern Europe, many other traditions that we now consider part of Christian worship were begun long before the participants had ever heard of Christ. The pagans of northern Europe celebrated the their own winter solstice, known as Yule. Yule was symbolic of the pagan Sun God, Mithras, being born, and was observed on the shortest day of the year. As the Sun God grew and matured, the days became longer and warmer. It was customary to light a candle to encourage Mithras, and the sun, to reappear next year.

Huge Yule logs were burned in honor of the sun. The word Yule itself means “wheel,” the wheel being a pagan symbol for the sun. Mistletoe was considered a sacred plant, and the custom of kissing under the mistletoe began as a fertility ritual. Holly berrieswere thought to be a food of the gods.

The tree is the one symbol that unites almost all the northern European winter solstices. Live evergreen trees were often brought into homes during the harsh winters as a reminder to inhabitants that soon their crops would grow again. Evergreen boughs were sometimes carried as totems of good luck and were often present at weddings, representing fertility. The Druids used the tree as a religious symbol, holding their sacred ceremonies while surrounding and worshipping huge trees.

In 350, Pope Julius I declared that Christ’s birth would be celebrated on December 25. There is little doubt that he was trying to make it as painless as possible for pagan Romans (who remained a majority at that time) to convert to Christianity. The new religion went down a bit easier, knowing that their feasts would not be taken away from them.

Christmas (Christ-Mass) as we know it today, most historians agree, began in Germany, though Catholics and Lutherans still disagree about which church celebrated it first. The earliest record of an evergreen being decorated in a Christian celebration was in 1521 in the Alsace region of Germany. A prominent Lutheran minister of the day cried blasphemy: “Better that they should look to the true tree of life, Christ.”

The controversy continues even today in some fundamentalist sects.

Cat Holiday Warnings & How to Cat Proof a Tree

Kittens and cats can do sometimes want to climb your tree. There are several ways to help eliminate damage, and protect both the tree and the cats.

First thing is to have a good stable large base for your tree. To secure the tree from falling over you can anchor a tree to the wall and or ceiling. Use heavy weight fishing line, one you can't break without cutting it, plus it's almost invisible.

Attach a small eye hook in the ceiling above the tree and one in the wall can give you two sources to anchor the tree too. Just take two pieces of line tie them both to the trunk of the tree and tie the other end to the ceiling anchor and or the other line to the wall anchor. This will make it almost impossible for your tree to tip over should kitty climb it.

*Tree flocking is highly toxic to cats.

If possible you may want to put the tree in a room, that you can close the door to and keep the cats away from the tree when you are not around to supervise.

Ornaments, beautiful, shiny, hanging balls of glass from a tree........ Can you think of anything more certain to be a big hit with kitties? They swing when you pat at them, if they can be gotten unbroken to the floor, oh boy the roll and kitty can chase, pat and pounce on them at least once. Plus you can hide under the tree to do it. What glorious cat fun!

If you have glass ornaments, you may want to put them higher up on the tree. And make sure you close the end of the hangers to secure them. Invest in some pretty, cat friendly, plastic ornamentation for the very bottom of the tree. It's safer, and less stressful for both you and your cats.

The first thing any cat does is to checkout the underside of the tree. They love laying under them. Some cats may drink tree water so forget the tree preservatives, just keep adding fresh water daily. A little 7up can be added also.

If kitty is a wire chewer, try some bitter apple on the tree light cords. Or better yet, get some auto wring loom at your local auto parts store and run all the lighting wires together at the bottom of the tree to the plug.

Other types of help-
Stay Away canister from Contech Electronics combines a battery-operated motion-detection device that senses a pet prowling nearby and activates a burst of compressed air and a one-second warning screech.
Stay Away around $40.00 at www.futurepets.com; for information about other products see www.scatmat.com.)

There are several different tree skirts or an add on piece, that can be purchased, which are supposed to keep cats away from the tree. You can order them from most online pet stores. You can also try citrus fruits under the tree, such as lemons cut in half. Cats don't like citrus scents.

String objects, especially tinsel and ribbons, are to be safeguarded at all costs. They are thin and sharp and can wrap around intestines or ball up in the stomach. Please be very careful with ribbon. Cats love to play with it, but it can prove fatal to them if it is ingested. Many cats end up having emergency surgery or die from tinsel and ribbon after the holidays.

Gift package wrapping. Curling ribbon is almost irresistible to cats. If eaten it can cause intestinal blockage requiring ER surgery. Be careful make sure you secure ribbon to a package tightly and waste lots of tape to make sure it stays on the pretty packages and will keep ribbon out of kitty tummy's. Packing peanuts, that stuff we use in boxes for padding around breakable, be careful kitty's will play with it and eat it too.

Potpourri, incense and candles can also prove dangerous. Never leave them burning when you are not in the room. Singed whiskers aren't very pretty. If your lucky enough to have a fireplace make sure that screens are kept tightly shut when you have a fire going.

Poinsettia's can make your cat ill, but they are not toxic except in very large amounts, such as the whole plant. So don't worry if you see a petal or leaf has been nibbled on.
Amaryllis are toxic, as are Mistletoe and Holly. Keep these away from your cats.

Christmas villages and trains are a lovely addition to your holiday decorations. It may be prudent to secure all the pieces of your village to a platform containing the entire village, by using earthquake putty or double back tape.

Christmas foods and treats can be another item kitty may want to try or accidentally get hold of can be bad for them. Keep candies and treats off coffee tables and out of easy reach. Make sure kitchen trash is cat proofed. A little roast turkey is fine for a cat treat as long as it's not attached to a bone.

Stress and company: With everyone coming and going, watch out for open doors and sneaky pets. Indoor cats don't do well in snow at all. Make sure your pets have collars and tags on in case of escape. Ask guests to keep an eye out for pets under foot and remind them that sometimes your normally friendly cat may be less than willing to deal with enthusiastic children and rooms full of unfamiliar people. Place a sign on your door such as," Please be careful cats inside". Write it on some cute holiday note paper and tuck in the wreath hanging on your door. Provide a special quiet place with a blanket and fresh water for your pets to retreat to when the festivities get too stressful.

The holidays can be such a frantic time full of so many activities and things that need to get done before Santa Claws arrives. It can be easy to over look the fact you are not spending as much time with your furry pals as before.
Try to schedule some time for them to be your main focus. Just a few minutes a day when your not distracted by anything and can play with them and show them affection. Just because they have fur, doesn't mean they don't have feelings. They shouldn't feel left out and forgotten about during the holidays, they give us such love, we need to give it back.

Tip: Get kitty some new toys. Whenever kitty wants to play with ornaments brake out a new toy to side track the cat. We all get so busy it's very easy to over look your cats need at holiday time. Make sure to make a little time just for you and cat. You 'll both be happier.

I hope these ideas will help to make your holidays happier and safer.

Astrology

Sagittarius November 23 to December 21

Traditional Traits
Optimistic and freedom-loving
Jovial and good-humored
Honest and straightforward
Intellectual and philosophical

On the negativeside. Blindly optimistic and careless
Irresponsible and superficial
Tactless and restless

Sagittarians have a positive outlook on life, are full of enterprise, energy, versatility, adventurousness and eagerness to extend experience beyond the physically familiar. They enjoy traveling and exploration, the more so because their minds are constantly open to new dimensions of thought. They are basically ambitious and optimistic, and continue to be so even when their hopes are dashed. Their strongly idealistic natures can also suffer many disappointments without being affected. They are honorable, honest, trustworthy, truthful, generous and sincere, with a passion for justice. They are usually on the side of the underdog in society they will fight for any cause they believe to be just, and are prepared to be rebellious. They balance loyalty with independence.

Sagittarians are usually modest and are often religious, with a strong sense of morality, though they tend to overemphasize the ethical codes they follow and worship beliefs about God rather than God Himself. This means that, negatively, they regard rigid, unloving, intolerant adherence to ritual and conventional codes as more important than the truths they symbolize or embody. They sometimes pay lip service to religions and political parties in which they have ceased to believe because the outward forms satisfy them, yet they may not hesitate to switch allegiance in politics or change their system of belief if they see personal advantage to themselves in doing so.

The Night Sky for December 2009

2 Full Moon
8 Last Qtr Moon
13 Geminid Meteor Shower
16 New Moon
24 First Qtr Moon
31 Full Moon Blue Moon

Note 2 full Moons

• The Full Cold Moon; or the Full Long Nights Moon - December During this month the winter cold fastens its grip, and nights are at their longest and darkest. It is also sometimes called the Moon before Yule. The term Long Night Moon is a doubly appropriate name because the midwinter night is indeed long, and because the Moon is above the horizon for a long time. The midwinter full Moon has a high trajectory across the sky because it is opposite a low Sun.
